Calendula
Calendula

Calendula is a perennial plant in the Aster/Daisy family. It is not originally native to North America but is widely cultivated in flower gardens and is easy to grow. The flowers are yellow or orange and appear year-round in warmer climates. Calendula flowers are edible raw in salads or dried and used as a seasoning. Tea is also made from the petals. The leaves are edible, but they are pretty bitter.
Calendula leaves and flowers are soothing to the skin and are used to treat all kinds of skin problems like acne, sunburn, and rashes, including diaper rash. The leaves make a healing poultice for minor cuts, scratches, bites, and skin irritations, just place the bruised leaves directly on the skin. The flowers can be used to make a healing butter or salve for skin irritations. The leaves and flowers have anti-bacterial, anti-fungal, anti-microbial, and anti-viral effects as well being an immunostimulant and are excellent for treating skin infections, including ringworm, athlete’s foot, thrush, diaper rash, and cradle cap. You can use Calendula infused oil or a butter or salve applied to the affected area several times a day. Slow healing wounds such as ulcers and hemorrhoids are soothed by the application of calendula as an ointment, gel, or salve. It speeds up healing and wound closure while improving skin firmness and hydration. Calendula increases the blood and oxygen availability in the infected area, which encourages rapid healing.
Calendula stimulates the immune system, induces collagen production and inhibits collagen degradation, making it great for an anti-aging oil blends.
It also relaxes muscles and can prevent spasms. Calendula tea treats abdominal cramping caused by constipation and menstrual cramping.
Calendula works to heal a variety of gastro-intestinal problems including intestinal colitis, GERD, esophageal irritation, peptic ulcers, and inflammatory bowel disease. It stimulates the immune system and the lymphatic system, has powerful antibacterial and antimicrobial properties and treats gingivitis, plaque, oral cavities and many other oral health issues. It helps remove toxins from the body and helps cleanse the liver and gallbladder. The detoxification properties also have a positive effect on the skin and help clear up chronic skin problems such as eczema and acne caused by the body’s efforts to rid itself of toxins. For detoxification, try an internal Calendula Extract.
Calendula is one of my favorite flowers! I grow it in my garden and it is a hit with the bees, butterflies and hummingbirds!
